warm little heads

I mentioned I was learning to knit, and starting with a chunky rib beanie for Mr Age 2?

Well …. *drumroll* ……

A beanie for Ryan

He likes wearing it, for about 4 seconds at a time, which isn’t nearly long enough to get a decent photo, so you will just have to pretend there is a sweet little blonde head inside the beanie!

Miss Age 4 has decided she wants one too, so we are off to find some chunky pink or purple yarn.  I think I will be getting quite good at this pattern!

In other creative happenings, I have found a creative way to get Mr Age 2 to eat more dairy… homemade rice pudding.  He refuses most dairy products, including the commercial custard / pudding things.  But when he gets the fun of stirring it for 20 minutes himself, scoffs down 2 bowls of the stuff!

Here is my recipe, slightly modified from a Jamie Oliver at Home version.

Put 1/2 cup of rice in a saucepan with 2 1/2 cups of milk.  Simmer gently for about 20 mins, stirring regularly (or constantly, if you have a child to entertain) until rice is nearly cooked (mixture will slowly thicken and reduce).

Add a couple of tablespoons of sugar, and some cinnamon & nutmeg to taste.  Simmer for another 5 minutes and serve immediately.

Or do what I did, make it before dinner, leave it in the saucepan until after dinner, and find that it  has turned to pudding concrete.  Then add a bit more milk and re-warm on the stove, with more stirring, to get back to custard consistency.

my creative space

I am learning to knit!  My Mum and sisters all knit *beeyootifully*  Me, I crochet.  That’s the way it is.  But recently the kids keep asking me to make things for them, and there aren’t a lot of kids’ jumper patterns in crochet.  So, I bit the bullet – and bought a ‘learn to knit’ book.

my first knitting!

I have been pleasantly surprised at how much I am enjoying the process, and how the motion of the basic stitches comes very naturally, after years of watching Mum knit.  The intricacies have had me stumped a couple of times, and I pulled the whole lot out once already, but I am quietly proud of my progress.  This is a chunky rib knit beanie for Mr Age 2 – it probably won’t stay on his head for very long (until we move somewhere very cold), but it is the thought that counts!  And I love the colour of the yarn (which is Patons Inca, by the way).

I asked Miss Age 4 if she thought her brother would like the colour (I told her it was chocolate brown).  Her considered response was “Yes, I think he will like it, because I know he likes chocolate“.  Little Miss Literal!

on another year gone by.  Today I turn 34.  Not a landmark number, but it got me thinking about things.

I was talking to my mum, and working out where we were living when she was 34 (we moved around the State a lot with dad’s work).  I was somewhat amazed to realise that I have quite a few memories of my mum, when she must have been 34.  I was about 8 at the time, so remember where we were living, family outings etc.  I remember that I thought my mum was so grown up, and…  middle aged!  Eeek!

My kids are younger than I was when my mum was 34, but even so, I find myself wondering what they will be thinking of me, in a few years.

Do I feel middle aged?  Heck no!

** thoughts interrupted to break up a fight because Mr Age 2 is walking his plastic toy cow over Miss Age 4, which she is  complaining about, loudly **

LOL – no wonder I don’t do much introspective reflection – who has time for it!
